Infant Gets Drunk on Parents Vodka

A 6-week-old girl in Kenesha, Wisconsin ended up in the intensive care unit (ICU) after ingesting an equivalent to 2 shots of vodka. The baby had a blood alcohol level of 0.294, more than three times the legal limit for an adult driver, said Lt. Brad Hetlet, of the Kenosha Police Dept.

The infant was mistakenly given baby formula mixed with two shots of vodka when "the girl's mother told police she filled a container with water to be used for the baby's bottle, set it on a kitchen counter and left the room. The girl's father entered the kitchen, emptied the container and filled it with vodka, intending to take the water bottle to a friend's home. When the mother returned to the kitchen, she mixed about two ounces of the liquid with baby formula and fed her baby, Hetlet said. "Sometime later they noticed the child behaving strangely, the child's feet were red, eyes were really squinty. Really, she appeared what I would say to be intoxicated," Lt. Hetlet continued.

The infant was taken to the local hospital and put into ICU as a precaution. The baby was later released. The investigators believe that the incident was a mistake on the part of the infant's parents and no charges of neglect would be filed. It is recommended that parents "make you sure you label it make sure you label container boldly with skull and crossbones or whatever the substance is that you put in there so you know exactly what you're getting when you drink out of the bottle," said Erin Pallasch, Illinois Poison Center.

The baby's father, Brian Smith, 22, was arrested and charged with domestic violence offenses, battery and resisting arrest, after he and his girlfriend argued following the discovery of their drunk baby. Lt. Hetlet stated, "then the blame game started." In fact, several fights ensued between the infant's father and her mother, family members and police as rescue workers arrived, Hetlet said.

This story could have had a very sad ending. Lt. Hetlet said the baby is expected to recover.I can only imagine the hangover the infant experienced - "poor baby".
